The CARGO Project (Comparison of Approaches to Risk Governance) was organized within the Science and Society area of the European Union Sixth Framework Programme. The project, which started in June 2006 and lasted for two years, was coordinated by Karita Research.

We compare three approaches to risk governance (risk informed decision making, precaution and risk reduction, risk deliberation) by using a number of example areas such as genetically modified organisms (GMO), mobile telephone risk assessment and remediation of chemically contaminated sites. We explore how risk governance can be made transparent to decision makers and the general public, and we arrive at recommendations for a comprehensive risk governance strategy. We communicate this with students and risk governance advisors at a summer school and with higher level policy makers at two meetings.
